Land of St. Hildegard

On the trail of a great lady

The Rheingau is Hildegard country

There is something fascinating about this great churchwoman. She lived and worked in the Rheingau. Here her tracks can be demonstratively followed, here lie her bones and here stands the St. Hildegard abbey. The Benedictines revere the Mistress and keep alive the memory of the words and work that even Emperor Barbarossa marvelled at.

A hallelujah to Saint Hildegard

Saint Hildegard never actually saw the great St. Hildegard abbey. She founded a monastery further down the valley in the Rüdesheim district of Eibingen. The small monastery church invites you to remember the great saint. The Hildegard shrine encloses her bones. In modern times Saint Hildegard found a second home in the middle of the vineyards. The monastery shop contains literature and beautiful souvenirs, including all kinds of spelt products, the beneficial properties of which Saint Hildegard was convinced. The church dignitary is celebrated in Rüdesheim on 17th September with the Hildegard festival.

Three days with Saint Hildegard

In October 2012 Saint Hildegard was nominated a Doctor of the Church. Reason enough for Hotel Im Schulhaus to honour her work and actions with a Hildegard Day. Here is a small foretaste: You can visit both the monastery church in Eibingen and the St. Hildegard abbey with its monastery shop. Once there you can converse with the Benedictine nuns and sample their wine. The 6.7 km footpath "Hildegard of Bingen Trail" takes a circular route through the vineyards of Rüdesheim to the pilgrimage church of Eibingen and the Benedictine Abbey of St. Hildegard. Points of interest and beautiful panoramic views along the way offer you insights into the life of Hildegard of Bingen and the landscape as she knew it. Arriving guests receive a small Hildegard package for information. It contains surprises and souvenirs from Saint Hildegard country.
