The Free State Bottleneck is a historical curiosity - and Lorch is right in the middle of it. Or rather, our little town of Lorch was right in the middle. Gone are the days when the motto was still valid in Lorch: Nowhere is it more beautiful than in the Free State of Bottleneck. But the good times are far from over.

We would be happy to tell you the story, because 2023 marks the 100th anniversary of the end of the Free State. And of course that had to be celebrated. But we always have reason to celebrate - and because almost everything in the Middle Rhine always revolves around wine, you can look forward to the Free State Edition. Of course, we have a few bottles left for our guests. Because as the saying goes: special circumstances require special measures...
When you check in, you immediately immerse yourself in the Free State: you acquire dual citizenship. This means you become a Free State citizen and can enjoy our Free State specialties in various restaurants and wine bars in Lorch and Kaub.
On your hikes and walks through the Free State you will meet many fellow citizens. It starts straight from the hotel. In one day towards Assmannshausen. After about 2 hours on foot you will reach the Weinhaus Freistaat Bottleneck. Marco and his wife welcome you there in an idyllic location, in the middle of the vineyards. The next day you hike through the former smugglers' country past the "Grenzvogt" towards Kaub. In the historic Bahles winery at Kauber train station you can enjoy the delicious Free State wine “step by step”.

Group offers
If you are a group of at least 15 people, we will be happy to put together your tailor-made program for you. This also includes a tour of the Free State of Bottleneck. Either as a city tour (duration approx. 1.5 hours) or as a day/half-day hike with a stop at a Free State business.
Dinner
We are a Garni hotel and offer you an extensive breakfast menu. Our winery Altenkirch will be happy to take care of your dinner. Our chefs will pamper you in a historic ambience. We cook with love for the region. The winery can be reached in 20 minutes on foot. For the sake of our environment
As part of our cooperation with VIABONO, you can stay with us in a climate-friendly manner. The contribution of € 0.45 /night/person goes towards an environmental project. In this way, you actively contribute to making our hotel a climate-friendly accommodation facility.
Cancellation policy:
Please note that we only accept free cancellations of arrangements in writing up to 14 days before arrival. For short-term cancellations, partial cancellations (e.g. one night for stays lasting several days) and no-shows, we reserve the right to charge 90% of the agreed contractual service. Minimum stay of 2-3 nights on weekends April - October.
Tourism tax
Since July 1, 2021, the city of Lorch has been charging a tourism fee of €2 per night/person (from 18 years of age) for trips for private and business reasons. The contribution is not part of the room price.
